Our Furnished apartments located at 375 Weaverville Highway, Sander Court, was originally one of Asheville’s first modern motels.
In the mid-1930’s, automobile ownership was growing, roads were improving and people were embarking on road trips. Motor courts sprung up around the country along highways to meet travelers’ needs. These provided lodging, parking, gas and home-style meals in attached diners.
“Colonel” Harlan Sanders, before the creation of Kentucky Fried Chicken, built his first motor court in Corbin Kentucky. Soon after, he spotted a great location for his second motor inn, just north of Asheville. Originally, there were about 50 guest rooms.
The Asheville location was not quite as successful as the Corbin KY inn. There was more competition and the tourist trade was not year-round at that time. Rationing and war-time restrictions led to the Asheville inn’s demise.
Colonel Sanders returned to Corbin to start his fried chicken business in earnest, and the property was taken over by Lee and Helen Roberts. The court’s central rooms were destroyed by a fire in 1956. They were rebuilt and then converted into apartments.
The Roberts sold the property in 1972.
Since then it has changed hands several times. The lot configuration has changed over the years as well. At some point, a sign painter may have inadvertently left the “s” off the sign, so the name became Sander Court, as it is now.
In the last few years, we have been renovating each space, transforming them into beautifully furnished apartments. There are currently 8 apartments, each with it’s unique style. All fully-furnished, with all of the amenities.
The apartments are conveniently located just minutes from Downtown Asheville. Nearby, you’ll find Ingles grocery store as well as The Shops at Reynolds Village and the Woodfin YMCA.
We are excited about the transformation of these apartments – ideal for corporate rentals, visiting nurses or a short-term stay if you are building or new to Asheville.
